Easy Visual Virus Checking

At my first article, I have described that how you can clean the infected external disk or memory without using the security softwares. We have already done preauditing a bit with using windows finder. At this article, we’ll create an AUTORUN.INF file ourself and we’ll check the external disk or memory without any click when we’ll enter to My Computer. Only an icon signs us if the external memory infected. I call “Inoculation” this method.

Let us see how this method is done. First, open NOTEPAD (Start > Run > ‘notepad’ ENTER) software. Write these lines. (as Image 1, Image 2, Image 3, Image 4, Image 5)

[autorun]

ICON=PHILIPS\icons\iconname.ico

Then save it to easy place to find (I prefer desktop) as AUTORUN.INF (like Image 5) and type must be ALL FILES (*.*).

The file which name is autorun.inf sets to work softwares or baleful scripts when double click to the external memory as we’ve pointed out before. This file also changes the external memory icon.

I wrote these lines for general knowledge. If these lines had been added to above lines,

OPEN=CarryItEasy.exe /AUTORUN

shell\configure=&Configure…

shell\configure\command=CarryItEasy.exe

shell\install=&Install…

shell\install\command=CarryItEasy.exe

the file would set to work CarryItEasy.exe. These lines are used in games,softares CD/DVD for preparing to install automaticly without any click. And we also see different icon at CD/DVD ROM hardwares (for ex. Windows, Call Of Duty, Medal Of Honour, Photoshop CD/DVD).

We want to change the external memory icon with our specific icon. We don’t want to execute any special software. So, lets turn back to the our autorun.inf lines,

this code introduces our specific icon to the system. Our icon must be .ICO extension. You can find lots of icon with .ico extention in the internet. I uploaded some icons and autorun.inf file for beginner user of compter.

I put my icon(chinaz15.ico) in to PHILIPS\icons\ folder.

Put your icon in to the folder you wish, then type ‘folder\iconname.ico’ as the lines at the top of this article into autorun.inf. Then, copy it and paste into the external memory. You can make hidden it from ticking HIDDEN in properties (in context click).

All operation finished. Now remove your external memory from pc, then remount it to pc. You’ll see the changed icon when you get in to MY COMPUTER. If you don’t see your special icon, your pc under dangerous and your pc infected. But if you see your special icon, you can get in to your external memory with complacency.

BUT, if you don’t see your specific icon after you mounted it to another pc, only the external memory is infected. You can clean it after read Security In My Hand Episode 1.

DON’T FORGET, IF YOUR PC IS INFECTED, IT WON’T GET BETTER. This method would be worthless, if your pc is infected. It works after you reinstall Windows.
